Course Details

Have you been dreaming of building wooden projects at home and think you need more power tools to do it? Then put down the latest tool catalogue, stop watching other people woodworking online and come along to learn how enjoyable it is to work with simple hand tools.

You will be surprised how much you can achieve by using traditional techniques that will allow you to work with less noise, dust and expense than power tools.

The course is aimed at developing the fundamental skills of hand tool work and understanding working with timber. The learning is suited to the beginner woodworker or somebody who is interested in traditional manual arts, but there is also enough challenge to keep you engaged as you progress.

The learning starts with some simple wooden utensils to get you familiar with the tools and comfortable in the workshop. You will progress onto practice exercises with the purpose of getting ready to build the main project, an elegant wall shelf.

Over the duration of the course, you will learn to sharpen chisels and plane irons which form a key part of producing quality work and provide satisfaction when shaping timber.

The course cost covers materials for 3 wooden utensils and 1 Wall Shelf (Height 550mm, 400mm wide, 110mm deep). If all 4 projects are completed before the end of the course, materials for any further projects will be supplied by the student.

This course is supported by the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) to assist with literacy and numeracy needs of students. You must attend 80% of the class. At the same time we hope you will learn other useful and interesting skills and have a lot of fun learning with us.
