Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin’, Beat Streat, and Wild Style, showcased dance crews and hip hop dance styles in their early stages, giving hip-hop mainstream exposure.
The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called “new style”—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called “jazz-funk”.
Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces. DanceWorks Indy is proud to offer both street and studio styles of Hip Hop dance!
Newly opened in September 2019, DanceWorks Indy is bringing dance and fitness classes to adults of all ages and abilities to Downtown Indianapolis. The first of it’s kind in our city, DanceWorks Indy is a studio build around the idea that dance works for everybody and every BODY.
Whether you are looking for a new hobby, returning to an old passion, or looking for a new way to cultivate a healthy lifestyle, we have something for you. By creating a warm, welcoming, and supportive space with affordable pricing, we hope to make dance accessible to all in a central location.
