Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10) students work through an updated course developed specifically for Distance Education. The 200-hour course is complemented via blended learning: a significant number of interactive e-learning tasks which enable students to consolidate their learning.
A wide variety of audio, video, and visual materials presented through the e-learning site brings the study of the language and culture alive.
Regular phone lessons with the teacher enable quick resolution of any problems in coursework. Study days or virtual Face-to-Face lessons enable students and teachers to interact with each other in a meaningful way.
Students gain a wide exposure to the Indonesian language, culture and way of life through a course complemented by e-learning delivery and a rich array of audio and visual material. Students work on materials designed for Distance Education by the NSW School of Languages. Students are expected to submit work regularly.
This includes handwritten submissions, interactive computer tasks as well as telephone lessons.
This regular contact with their teacher enables the student to practice their oral and listening skills in addition to providing an opportunity for students to discuss any matter with their teacher. Study days or virtual Face-to-Face lessons enable students and teachers to interact with each other in a meaningful way.
Students develop all skills required in the syllabus. The course is delivered via blended learning: a wealth of self-correcting exercises so the students can get immediate feedback; there are also a variety of tasks that require students to consolidate their learning and to get examination practice.
Students have weekly telephone lessons with their teacher during which time they can hone their Indonesian conversation skills and discuss anything needing clarification. Students also join the virtual or Face-to-Face lessons where they can easily contact their teacher as well as one another.
Students with experience in the language will find this course to be very rewarding as they are able to maintain their knowledge of their own culture and language. In both the Preliminary and HSC courses students study a variety of interesting contemporary issues such as Family in contemporary society.
The influence of popular culture on young people, What it means to be Indonesian, and Environmental issues.
Many of these issues are explored through the study of literary texts such as short stories and films. The Indonesian and Literature Courses complement the study of English and are a valuable addition to any student's education.

Student learning is supported through a diverse program of online learning materials, speaking lessons, video conferencing, online forums, email and study days at our school where students enjoy the opportunity to meet with other students and staff.
The use of the telephone and video conferencing ensure that students have close connections with their teachers, despite the fact that they are not in the same physical space. Our students are drawn from over 460 schools across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and other rural regions across New South Wales.
The school also offers Stage 6 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) to students in regional government secondary schools. In the 2020 Higher School Certificate (HSC), 69% of our students achieved results above the state mean and NSW School of Languages students achieved First in State in 11 courses. Fifty-five students were placed in High Achievers List, earning marks placing them in top 5 in the state.
Of the 820 HSC students, 65% of students achieved a mark in the top two bands. Of the students studying an Extension course, 96% of students achieved in the top 2 bands.
The school has written new courses in Canvas for Year 9, 10, Year 11 and 12 Beginners and Extension students. These courses represent the latest pedagogy in online learning. Teachers will continue participating in professional learning on language pedagogy, assessment, and working with students with special needs.
Teachers at NSW School of Languages are experts in their language. More than half of the staff assist the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to mark the HSC each year with a significant number involved in the setting or assessment of the examinations.
Our teachers present their research and expertise in languages and e-learning to international, state and local conferences. We hope that you enjoy your association with NSW School of Languages.
