This course aims to provide healthcare professionals knowledge and skills on IPC principles and practices to perform, evaluate and develop appropriate IPC standards efficiently in their respective clinical areas. The course will also prepare infection control link nurses to perform their expected roles and responsibilities proficiently.
Course Outline
Understand the basic epidemiology of common transmissible infectious diseases.
Describe infectious disease transmission and approaches to break the chain of transmission.
Discuss the impact of healthcare associated infections and the components of an effective infection prevention and control programme.
Apply relevant standard and transmission-based precaution knowledge to upkeep infection control standards in clinical areas.
Understand basic microbiology and relevant microorganisms of concern including multi-drug resistant organisms.
Explain the importance of correct technique of collection and handling of microbiological specimens.
Perform accurate risk assessment and execute appropriate infection prevention and control practices according to recommended standards.
Apply appropriate principles of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization protocols in the care and handling of medical equipment and instruments.
Describe the importance of environmental cleaning and disinfection in preventing spread of pathogens.
Adhere to relevant local guidelines and international evidence-based practices to prevent device associated infections.
Distinguish the difference between emerging and re-emerging infections.
Describe the various multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO) and care of patients with MDRO from the infection control perspective.
Implement relevant infection control strategies during any disease outbreak.
Discuss the impact of IPC concerns during construction and renovation.
