Course Details

Interior designers create, develop and suggest functional and aesthetic interior design concepts for residential, commercial and industrial buildings as well as public institutions. They prepare production drawings, help coordinate design work and ensure the quality of the project as well as conformity with applicable codes and standards.

Interior designers work for interior design businesses, real estate developers, architectural firms, furniture stores, home décor centres, cabinetmakers, etc. They can also be self-employed.

Interior designers increasingly rely on computer technology. These specialists use word processing software, spreadsheets and computer-assisted drawing and design software for tasks involving drawing, planning and executing plans and specifications. They use the Internet to conduct searches on materials, finishes and various other components.

Depending on the position they hold, and the nature and scope of a given project, interior designers must communicate with several different people including clients, architects, engineers, entrepreneurs, property owners, lighting specialists, acoustics specialists, artists, artisans and suppliers of specialized services (upholstery, sewing, materials and accessories, etc.). They also deal with colleagues such as designers, graphic artists, researchers and draftspersons/illustrators. Their work environment requires the mastery of communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
