This one-day course will cover the basics of tools and techniques of wood turning, and you’ll go home the proud owner of a simple hand-turned item at the end of the day. For example, you might want to create a garden dibber or a fruit bowl. If this is your first time at wood turning, we can look at the various tools and cuts they make. We can then concentrate on one aspect to allow you to make a simple item.
My wood turning work has mainly consisted of staircase associated work and general architectural work (e.g. newel posts & spindles), but I’ve developed a passion for craft turning in varied forms over the last couple of years. I want to pass on this knowledge and help others to develop their own wood turning skills.
This is me in the workshop with a couple of recent small projects and some of bits of burr, horse chestnut and (in the back) ash that are awaiting inspiration.
You will complete a minimum of 30 hours of on-the-job experience within the industry and have the opportunity to work on many live projects in the community.
Carpenters work with wood on building sites or in customers’ homes to fit or repair doors, window frames, staircases, floorboards, cupboards, roof trusses and partitions.
The course is designed for young people who want to pursue a career in the Construction Industry as a Carpenter. It provides you with skills and knowledge to start a career in one of the biggest industries in the UK.
Dexterity is practiced using hand tools and small power tools, with a strong understanding of health and safety being built in to all learning.
At this level, no prior knowledge or skills in furniture making is assumed. Students are taken from the basic understanding of tools and materials through to the making of a furniture project.
