Introduction to Woodworking is a nine week course that serves as the preliminary class in our three course furniture making series. Here you will have an opportunity to learn about the characteristics of wood and the basic principals of woodworking through lectures, demonstrations, and most importantly, practical application.
Focusing primarily on the use of hand tools, you will learn how to use a saw, chisel, and hand planes. You’ll learn to sharpen chisels using grinders, water stones and sand paper.
You will learn to make a variety of joints, including: lap joints, bridle joints, mortise and tenon joints and dovetail joints. These joints will be used in the construction of your projects, which will be a hinge mortise, a picture frames, a plant stand, and an exercise in through dovetails. You’ll also use the router table, and various hand-held power sanders while working on your projects.
The Chicago School of Woodworking, LLC (“CSW”) was established in 2007 to train students in the art of furniture making. Since then, our program has expanded to include the arts of turning, scroll saw, marquetry, Chip Carving, and speaker making and cabinet making.
Our shop is located at 5680 N. Northwest Highway. It is approximately 13,500 square feet, has plenty of windows and a shop dog. There is plenty of street parking, easy access to I-90, I-94, Metra and Blue Line trains. Indoor bicycle parking
At a time when many schools, park districts and community centers are eliminating woodworking programs due to liability and expense, we are committed to providing students the knowledge and skills to create functional and beautiful furniture that can be enjoyed for generations.
We have chosen machinery and tools that are safe, up-to-date, and well maintained, so students can focus on learning and enjoy the varied aspects of building a quality piece of furniture or crafting wood art. As we expand, we have been fortunate to welcome to our program, skilled instructors who love what they do and want to pass on their skills and passion for their art.
Combining traditional woodworking with leather work, Mary Tsai will guide students to learn the fundamentals of understanding wood, milling, joinery and glue-ups while also working with leather.
