Our motto “Rerum Cognoscere Causas” (to discover the causes of things), is as relevant today as when we were founded in 1905. However, the world is now a very different place.

Yet we’ve always looked to the wider world for inspiration and collaboration, welcoming students and staff from over 140 countries and nurturing research and alumni links across the world. These partnerships not only provide international opportunities for our people but also drive investment locally. This is a global university. Not just in our outlook, not just in our ambition, but in the challenges we tackle every day.

Our diverse and inclusive community brings together different views, approaches and insights, leading to richer, more creative and innovative teaching and research.
Learning Japanese has never been more interesting and amusing than it is today.Japanese constitutes the unique language family ‘Japonic’, and it is the ninth most spoken of all the existing languages, with over 121 million of its speakers centred in Japan as of 2009.
International Society offers Japanese Language class. All year round we run a programme of friendly, fun and informal language classes. The classes are taught by our team of dedicated volunteers.
If you have never studied Japanese before these courses are for you. Whether you're looking for an introduction to the language before a holiday, or want to study intensively, we have a range of classes available.
There are more than 125 million native speakers of Japanese and, despite the language's apparent complexity, its popularity as a second language is growing (particularly in China, South Korea and Australia).
Our Japanese speakers, fully qualified to teach their native tongue, can train you and, if need be, the rest of your group at a time that is suitable to you, at your home or place of work.
