Are you ready to be certified in Japanese? Then you have to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) administered by Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES) in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. The JLPT is conducted only twice a year, July and December.

There are five levels of the exam, with N5 the being the first and the easiest level and N1 being the last and the most challenging level. For serious job seekers who will need Japanese for daily professional purposes, you must pass at least the N2 certification exam.

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has reading and listening formats and will test your knowledge of different grammatical structures and Kanji characters.

Levels:

  • N5: Basic/Beginner’s Level: This level has been specially designed for students who wish to start reading, writing, listening and speaking Japanese as a beginner. It begins with hiragana and katakana, includes approximately 120 kanjis, vocabulary building and rudimentary grammar rules. This level would enable students to communicate and understand daily conversations on topics concerning themselves, daily events, interests, etc.
  • N4: Elementary Level: This is the second level. In this level you can communicate and understand daily life situation and follow most ordinary conversations, if spoken slowly. One has to master around 300 Kanjis and 1500 Japanese words in this level.
  • N3: Intermediate Level: With N3 being the third level of JLPT, one can speak, read, and converse at near-natural speed and understand the conversations in everyday situations. You are required to learn approximately 600 to 700 Kanji and also about 3000 to 4000 Japanese words.
  • N2: Intermediate Advanced This is the upper intermediate level. There is an even more notable jump-up in requirements as the demand surges to 1000 kanji and 6000 words. Job seekers are advised to achieve this level as many Japanese companies prefer candidates having this level of proficiency.
  • N1: Advanced Level This level is the highest and most sophisticated level. This level demands a mastery of 2000 to 2500 kanji and more than 10,000 words. In other words, your proficiency resembles near-native!
