This course is designed for students who wish to study Japanese in Years 9 and 10 as an elective subject. Students with no knowledge, some prior knowledge or background knowledge of Japanese are eligible to study this course.
The course is delivered online through Canvas and contains a variety of interactive learning activities. There are worksheets and online tasks which students need to submit weekly.
Regular weekly speaking lessons delivered on-screen are also an integral part of the course. During these one-on-one lessons, students will develop their speaking skills and have the opportunity to discuss any queries about the course work with their teacher.
Face-to-face lesson days each term are organised so that students can meet their classmates and participate in active language learning activities at NSW School of Languages.
Stage 5 Background stream
Students who will qualify for the Japanese in Context course in Stage 6 are given a program of study which prepares them for the Stage 6 Japanese in Context course.
The Stage 5 Year 9 and 10 Background stream courses are an online Moodle course. These courses provide a wide range of texts for students to explore the language use and cultural understanding.
The course consists of 40 units, 21 of which are completed in Year 9 and 19 in Year 10. Students have speaking lessons with their teacher on a weekly basis to discuss their progress, ask questions and participate in Japanese speaking practice.
100-hour course Japanese
The 100 hour course is for Year 10 students who have not studied Japanese in Year 8 or Year 9. The students will gain an elementary knowledge of Japanese through their work with the course materials on Canvas and on-screen lessons for speaking practice.
Face-to-face lessons days are also organized for students to meet and interact with their peers at the NSW School of Languages.
Japanese Beginners
The Preliminary and HSC Japanese Beginners courses are designed for students with little or no prior knowledge of the Japanese language.
This course aims to develop the fundamental skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing while enabling students to deepen their understanding of the Japanese culture.
Students work through the module content, activities and quizzes through our online platform, Canvas and engage in weekly speaking lessons with their teacher to develop their speaking skills. Lesson days are offered once a term for our students to get together and consolidate their understanding of certain topics in the course.
Japanese Continuers
The Preliminary and HSC Japanese Continuers' courses are designed for students with 200 hours prior learning in Stage 5. Delivered via the Canvas learning platform, the courses contain a range of different activities such as quizzes where students can develop their skills and receive immediate feedback.
Students have weekly on-screen lessons with their teacher to develop their conversational skills and receive additional feedback and support. Study days are held at NSW School of Languages at various times throughout the year.
Japanese in Context
The Preliminary and HSC Japanese in Context courses are online courses with lessons, quizzes and downloadable content.
The courses contain a range of different activities such as YouTube videos, listening and reading activities. There are vocabulary and grammar quizzes where students can develop their skills and receive immediate feedback.
The Preliminary course consists of 15 units of course work, with 14 units in the HSC course. Students also have weekly on-screen lessons with their teacher to develop their skills and receive additional feedback and support. Study days are held at NSW School of Languages at various times throughout the year.
Japanese Extension
The Japanese extension course focuses on the movie called "Your Name", or "Kimi no Na wa" in Japanese. (2016 Directed by Makoto Shinkai)
Two teenagers share a profound, magical connection upon discovering they are swapping bodies. But things become even more complicated when the boy and girl decide to meet in person.
The course aims to introduce students to a more advanced level of Japanese language, enabling them to discuss various prescribed issues both in written and oral tasks. (Students are required to watch the movie.)
The course prescribed issues include "Connectedness" "Journeys" and "The impact of the past."

Student learning is supported through a diverse program of online learning materials, speaking lessons, video conferencing, online forums, email and study days at our school where students enjoy the opportunity to meet with other students and staff.
The use of the telephone and video conferencing ensure that students have close connections with their teachers, despite the fact that they are not in the same physical space. Our students are drawn from over 460 schools across the greater Sydney metropolitan area and other rural regions across New South Wales.
The school also offers Stage 6 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) to students in regional government secondary schools. In the 2020 Higher School Certificate (HSC), 69% of our students achieved results above the state mean and NSW School of Languages students achieved First in State in 11 courses. Fifty-five students were placed in High Achievers List, earning marks placing them in top 5 in the state.
Of the 820 HSC students, 65% of students achieved a mark in the top two bands. Of the students studying an Extension course, 96% of students achieved in the top 2 bands.
The school has written new courses in Canvas for Year 9, 10, Year 11 and 12 Beginners and Extension students. These courses represent the latest pedagogy in online learning. Teachers will continue participating in professional learning on language pedagogy, assessment, and working with students with special needs.
Teachers at NSW School of Languages are experts in their language. More than half of the staff assist the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to mark the HSC each year with a significant number involved in the setting or assessment of the examinations.

In this course you will learn how to read and write Japanese Hiragana and Katakana and basic skills to get you on the way to speaking Nihongo!
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has been offered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (formerly Association of International Education, Japan) since 1984.
Japanese Elementary 1 is suited to those who want to use simple Japanese to communicate with family and friends, with people in the workplace or for travel purposes, and for a better understanding of Japanese people through cultural insights and intercultural skills.
