This Minor combines language study and cultural knowledge of Japanese society and is designed to boost the employment prospects of STEM graduates. It equips students with the skills to communicate and negotiate with people of different cultural backgrounds.
Graduates will be able to speak and behave appropriately in different situations and contexts, and demonstrate an understanding of Japanese culture and society. By pairing with a Major in Medicine, Social Sciences, Science or Engineering, students gain an advantage after graduation as they enter the global employment market.
For students taking a minor which shares units with their other unit sets (majors or minors):
In order for minors to be recognised on academic and graduation documents, students may only have a maximum of one unit overlapping between their unit sets.
Outcomes
Students are able to:
demonstrate a Japanese language proficiency, in both oral and written forms, equivalent to N5 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test;
demonstrate cultural competence and an understanding of the current socio-cultural issues in Japan; and
acquire information literacy and management skills in Japanese through a variety of media and search techniques.

Level 1 classes are Beginner language classes - no prior learning is expected or catered for. You will learn how to speak, write and read and have the opportunity to continue on to Level 2 in the following term.
At the end of your course you will receive a Certificate of Completion, detailing what you studied, for how many hours, and your final level. While our courses are not accredited by any university or similar institution, we can dedicate a portion of your course to exam prep.
