Students will learn techniques of improvisation and rhythm. Classes are designed to provide a solid foundation in the styles of dance used in theatre, musical theatre, Broadway, entertainment and as a basis for more complex styles such as lyrical and contemporary.
Jazz incorporates a variety of elements that empower one to overcome gravity and break loose – it is emotional, lively, earthbound and funky.
Jazz is characterized by the use of improvisation, individuality and is influenced by rhythms and various dance techniques. It is a constantly evolving form of popular and artistic dance movement danced to up-tempo music.

Senior dancers regularly take part in international conventions and other opportunities to expose them to artists from across the globe.
Guest artists work with Academy students from around North America bringing with them their expertise in Broadway, film and television.
Academy jazz dancers also have the opportunity to take part in local performances, competitions and events.
Graduates have gone on to perform with Cirque du Soleil, Bad Boys of Dance, various cruise lines, Broadway, music videos and entertainment companies.

The Richmond Academy is a member of the BC Dance Educator’s Association, Richmond Chamber of Commerce, West Coast Tap Dance Collective, BC Alliance for Arts and Culture, Richmond Arts Council, Canadian Dance Assembly, BC Artist Registry, Candance.org and has teachers who have obtained Registered Teacher Status with various international organizations including the Royal Academy of Dance.
Students age 10 & over will receive a 45 min. class once a week for the 10 week session. (Session begins in September and once again in January). Jazz is a high energy style of dance and the class consists of basic jazz steps, traveling steps & mini combinations.
Dancers will learn terminology and various forms of movement including turns, jumps, splits, etc. Jazz classes mix the element of energy with the challenge of a variety of movements. Classes run all dance year for 45 minutes a week, with a year-end recital routine.
Talk about high energy! Students will walk through this technique using the ADAPT syllabus. Class will always begin with a warm-up that includes stretching, strengthening, and muscle conditioning.
Jazz Dance originates from a variety of dance styles such as African & Swing, and moves us through time with new and inspired movements from Broadway, Pop Music, and different Dance Companies and Choreographers.
Energetic, exhilarating, up-tempo, and an excellent body conditioner. It blends popular music and current dance trends with the polish and technique of performance dance.
