Our Level 1 in Hairdressing is a specialist vocationally related introductory qualification designed for those interested beginning a career in hairdressing with little or no previous experience of working in a salon.
There will be the opportunity to apply for an Apprenticeship programme in hair and that this level 1 will provide a good foundation to an apprenticeship and progression on to our level 2 programme.
What will I study?
During this course you will study:
Developing Self
Preparation for work
Working towards goals
Working as part of a group
Styling Women's hair
Shampoo and condition hair
Plaiting and twisting hair
Personal and Social development - This includes work experience, target setting, working with others and salon management skills.
How will this course be delivered?
The practical elements of this course will be delivered in the college commercial salons, some demonstrations and practical learning may take place at home using remote learning platforms and block heads.
The other half of the program involves theory sessions and assignment writing which may be done remotely or on the college premises. Work experience will also be completed to provide employability skills.
There will be opportunities from the end of February to progress onto Apprenticeship programs and learn advanced skills towards Level 2.

Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is by practical observations, course work and assignments.
How do I get a place on the course?
Apply online and places are offered by an interview.
What are the entry requirements?
Minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade 2 or above, including English
Successful interview
Satisfactory reference
What else do I need to know?
A minimum of 90% attendance is needed to complete the course however, 100% is expected.
One week of compulsory work experience will take place during the course.

Uniform: £ TBC
You will need to pay for your Kit and uniform unless funding is available for you.
Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.
If you haven't achieved an A*/9 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades additional one to one sessions are available from our learning zone and are arranged by you and your tutor around your time table.

What can I do after this course?
Most learners who are successful on this course will progress to Level 2 NVQ hairdressing or barbering, either full time in college or in the work place as an apprentice.
