This qualification is designed for those working with and caring for children in the absence of parents.
The course meets the requirements for those working in early years settings and uses the criteria for effective paediatric first aid training found in Appendix 1 of the Early Years Foundation Stages Practice Guidance document as recognised by Ofsted.
Course Content
Recognising and dealing with the following in babies and children:
Airway and breathing problems
Choking and drowning – resuscitation
Bleeding and shock
Anaphylactic shock
Burns and scolds
Suspected fractures
Head, neck and back injuries
Poisoning
Foreign bodies in eyes, ears, the nose of babies and children
Bites and stings
The effects of extreme heat and cold
Febrile convulsions
Chronic medical conditions including epilepsy, asthma, sickle cell amaemia and diabetes
Meningitis and other sudden illness
Record keeping and action plans
Who is this course for?
Nursery staff, pre-school staff, teachers, parent and toddler group volunteers, child minders and nannies, foster carers, babysitters, community workers parents and other family members.
This course is also recommended for those students working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.
The course is 12 hours and would normally be delivered over 2 days.
Assessment and certification
The course is assessed by continual observation of candidate’s performance.
Certificates from First Aid Awards (FAA) are valid for three years and are awarded if candidates successfully complete and pass the course.
Revalidation
This certificate is revalidated by attending another 12 hour paediatric first aid course within 3 years.
