This course is designed to help workers understand the different types of energy in their workplaces, the devices available for use to assist with isolation.
Stored energy, including electricity, is a leader in industrial workplace injury and fatality with many people caught in, caught between, pulled into, entangled, nipped, pinched and crushed by machinery not properly isolated.
The most common denominator in these events is people not being trained in proper isolation techniques, being unfamiliar with the energy being stored and proper operation of the equipment and bypassing guards and safety devices intended to protect workers while servicing, repairing or maintaining machinery*.
This course is designed to help workers understand the different types of energy in their workplaces, the devices available for use to assist with isolation.
It assists with identifying best practices in designing a program and approach to effectively mitigating hazards where machinery could harm or injure. Certification for this course is valid for three years from the date of issue.?
?This course supports effective means for worker duty of care; it does not negate the employer requirement to properly identify hazards associated with their industry specific machinery.
Employers are responsible for obtaining engineered prestart operations on all machinery and training their personnel on safe de-isolation of equipment in addition to this training course material.
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will:
Become familiar with Ontario legislation and standards that discuss the requirement for effective energy isolation
?Describe the duties within the Internal Responsibility System in managing exposure energized equipment
Understand different types of energy stored in equipment
Be familiar with the equipment used/ available in energy isolation
Describe some of the controls used to isolate energy as per the hierarchy of controls
Identify hazards associated with energized equipment
Describe the information required for tags used in lock-out procedures
Identify components required for designing procedures for safe isolation and locking out energy in industrial equipment

Not all workplace hazards can be fully controlled or eliminated. When hazards in the work environment cannot be ‘engineered out’, or when guards, shields and other safety devices have limited effectiveness, there will often be a need to wear personal protective equipment.
This program provides workers with the basic knowledge to operate loader equipment. Workers will be trained on hand signals, safe operation, conducting pre- checks, pinch points and legislative requirements.
