This module focuses on mentoring and coaching in relation to the purposes, context, processes, skills and impact on the clinical learning environment.

Participants on this module will be required to engage in an analysis of the nature of supportive and developmental relationships in the field of clinical education, including evaluation of the theoretical constructs of mentoring and coaching, current research and benefits to both the individual and the organisation.

Participants will be required to explore in some depth the roles of mentoring and coaching in their own specific area of clinical practice.

Who is this module for?

This module is specifically designed for experienced clinicians studying the field of clinical education at an advanced level. This multi-professional module is suitable for doctors, dentists, nurses and other allied health professionals who are involved in the support and assessment of learners in clinical practice.

Please note, this is not an NMC-approved Mentor preparation module, although some participants who choose to study this module may have previously undertaken such a course.

This module would be complementary to any previous learning in this area and would build on and enhance their knowledge, understanding and skills within this important sphere of professional education.

What are the key aims of the module?

  • To explore the role of the mentor and coach in supporting learners in a variety of healthcare settings.

  • To examine the use of mentoring and coaching in their own area of clinical practice.

  • To critically reflect on the knowledge and skills which are needed to perform the role of the mentor and coach effectively.

How will I study?

This module is delivered through a blend of online learning and face-to-face sessions.

What will I study?

This module offers an opportunity to explore key concepts relating to mentoring and coaching, including:

  • Roles and responsibilities of mentors and/or coaches.

  • Relationships and boundaries within mentorship and coaching.

  • Theoretical frameworks and current research underpinning mentorship and coaching.

  • Key inter-personal skills – listening, developing trust and rapport.

  • Reflection on the mentor/coach role.

  • The role of the mentor and coach within the organisation.

How will I be assessed?

There are no exams on this module. The module assessment will build on what you learn during your studies, and you will be required to produce two pieces of academic work to demonstrate your achievement of the module learning outcomes:

  • An evaluative report on the practice of mentoring and/or coaching in their own area of clinical practice. This should include a rigorous analysis of the current research and literature.

  • A reflective statement including a critical commentary on the skills needed to be an effective mentor or coach. This will include reflection on their own experience of being either a mentor/coach or a mentee/coachee.

To successfully complete the module, you will also be required to complete a series of compulsory online discussion activities.

On successful completion you will:

  • Successful completion of this module will enable you to critically analyse and explore a range of theoretical and practical issues relating to mentoring and coaching in the clinical education context.

  • You will enhance your knowledge and skills as a mentor and coach, with the opportunity to review your own professional development needs and to plan and undertake relevant and appropriate activities to meet those identified needs
