Course Details

Modern Theatre is one of the twelve branches of dancing offered by the ISTD. It comprises of Jazz, Contemporary and Lyrical styles.

Children may start Modern dance exams from the age of 5 with the Primary level, and progress through to the highest level of Advanced 2.

Examinations are held in Wanganui (usually) during August/September each year. Examiners from all over the world annually travel to New Zealand to undertake examination tours.

Modern Theatre training is an excellent preparation for students wishing to progress to Musical Theatre, and complements classical ballet training. With a strong emphasis on style and rhythm, Modern dance can build confidence in the shy child and provide a vehicle for expression in the extrovert!

Classes always start with a limbering section, which enhances flexibility in all dance styles. Each graded level has its own set dance and a ‘teacher’s dance’ which is choreographed to up-to-date music – always a plus for the young dancer!

Classes are upbeat and fun, from beginners right through to senior level.

Each stage is as important as the other – more than any other dance form, ballet requires correct technique and patient correction from a trained teacher. After 14 years of training, and have completed a Master of Arts degree at Auckland University, Anna decided to concentrate on a teaching career.

She completed two years of part-time study with Julia Barry studying a course developed by her, based on the Royal Ballet School teachers training program, while at the same time teaching part-time for vocational students at the Auckland Ballet Academy.

Teacher's Experience
Rebecca started dancing in Whanganui at age 4. Her training included RAD Ballet Graded and Vocational exams, ISTD Modern Theatre and the ISTD Jazz Awards. At Whanganui High School she received Distinctions in Dance, and the Principal’s Cup for Contribution to Dance. In 2004, Rebecca was accepted into Unitec in Auckland to study Contemporary Dance. After a year of full time dance training, working with dancers & choreographers such as Michael Parmenter & Malia Johnston she decided to follow a teaching career and share her passion for dance with others. Starting a family in 2005 gave her the opportunity as a new mum to create and teach a postnatal Pilates class which opened up new pathways in the fitness industry, leading to her becoming a qualified Les Mills group fitness instructor. During this time she was also choreographing and performing for an impersonations company that involved travelling all over NZ.
