Aim To introduce participants to the principles of Motivational Interviewing and to increase confidence and skills in working with people who are resistant to change.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concept of motivation and how it relates to behaviour change

  • Identify the skills needed when assessing clients motivation

  • Identify ways to improve interventions with people who are resistant to changing some of their risk behaviours

  • Apply counselling skills to promote clients motivation

  • Outline the theoretical basis for this style of information.

This introductory course is useful for people working with clients engaging in risky behaviours and who are resistant to change. Participants will be introduced to ideas about how motivation can be enhanced by exploring ambivalence and by using counselling skills to help clients identify their own priority areas for change. The course is aimed at frontline workers and assumes no or little knowledge of the subject area.

The sessions above will take place face to face at our purpose built training centre, with pre course learning to complete ahead of each session.
