MCMS offers private lessons and semi-private lessons on a variety of musical instruments in a wide range of musical styles to students of all ages.
We are open year-round, closing during regular school holidays, and July 4th holiday in the summer. We welcome students to enroll throughout the year.
Lessons are usually taken weekly, but can also be bi-weekly with the consent of the instructor. Private lessons are for one student at a time, and a semi-private lesson is for two students at the same time, which is often convenient for family members studying the same instrument.
MCMS has two student recitals during the year, in December and June, if students wish to perform. Performance is encouraged, but not required.
We usually offer small group classes for three or more students. However, due to the Covid virus we are not currently offering any in-person group instruction. We hope to be able to offer group instruction in Spring. Please check our classes page in the next few months for more information.
Welcome to Marin Community Music School, your Marin County community resource for private lesson instruction and chamber music coaching for students of all ages.
We offer private lessons in guitar, drums, bass, violin, viola, cello, ukulele, music theory and composition, and piano. New students are welcome to enroll throughout the year. Arrange an introductory visit here.
The music school is conveniently located in downtown San Anselmo in Marin County, easily accessible from any area in central Marin and beyond. MCMS is offering in-person private lessons for all ages at the school, in compliance with county-mandated Covid-19 protocols.
Masks are mandatory when inside the school. Group classes are not available at this time, but we plan to reinstate them in Spring. Please check back for updates.
Since its founding in 2009 the school has been offering lessons, classes, recitals, and events. Our instructors are active performing musicians, teaching a diverse selection of instruments and styles, to over 100 students, ranging in age from 5 to 85.
MCMS is a non-profit music school, dedicated to providing reasonably-priced quality musical instruction to the Marin community. We believe making music is an important part of everyday life, and encourage interested students of all ages to learn a new instrument, rekindle musical skills from years past, or develop their existing skills to a higher level of artistic excellence.
Music Theory Lesson are offered by Community Music Center. Community Music Center makes high quality music accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, regardless of financial means. Classes are offered on a sliding scale and some are completely tuition-free.
It helps students become more advanced songwriters and composers, and music theory also helps students get a big picture understanding about how music works for their specific instrument and for other instruments as well
Music Theory lessons allow children to read and write music notation, to understand how music works and to hear and read is merely a means to an end – music students should be able to use their music theory skills to play their instrument in a more informed manner and to compose their own music.
After your free introductory lesson, if you decide to continue, you will fill out a short contract authorizing us to charge your credit card for the remaining lessons in the month.
Our classes consist of private or group instruction in-home or on campus, and we offer anywhere from 30 to 60 minute lessons. We strive to make learning music fun for our students, and believe in a holistic approach that combines technique with a deep understanding of music theory.
