The course is aimed at the adventurous beginner and those with more experience as it will build on the basics of painting: the qualities of paint, how to use paint in an effective way and how to plan and create original compositions in your own style.
On this course, you’ll be encouraged to create a range of work that explores both the medium of paint and your own painting style.
Throughout the course there’ll be a range of practical activities and inspiring projects for you to engage with, supported by demonstrations of specific materials and techniques, and supportive group critiques.
You’ll study how to effectively use different applications including impasto, sgraffito, dry-brushing, wet-on-wet, mark making and texture gels.
Learning a foreign language is a wonderful opportunity to not only learn the language itself, but also to reveal different perspectives on life, enabling you to explore new cultures through a different lens.
Our courses are more than just engaging classroom sessions supported by excellent online resources.You’ll also have the option to take assessments and be awarded a Nottingham Trent University (NTU) Language Programme Certificate of Achievement.

This course is a steppingstone towards an apprenticeship or employment as a painter or decorator which can lead to further learning of specialised skills or owning your own business. The course is based at Edinburgh College’s Granton campus.

Hybrid course: you have the option to study this course onsite at our Waterloo Centre or to attend completely online. This course will follow a structured programme covering approaches to abstract painting: materials & techniques, colour mixing, relationships & optical effects.
