TMAIC is owned by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar. The administration of the Institute is carried out by the Governing Board constituted by the Kottayam - Kochi Diocese of the Church. The Director, appointed by the governing board, manages the Institute. Rev. Dr. Joe Joseph Kuruvilla serves as the present director.
Aim
TMAIC provides counselling services to individuals, families and groups. The practice of counselling at the Institute incorporates psychological and spiritual resources integrated in ways that facilitate holistic healing. The institute also extends training, seminars and workshops in counselling and psychotherapy to the public, counsellors and psychologists.
History
In view of the growing need for counselling in India, the Mar Thoma Church started the "Thomas Mar Athanasius Counselling Centre" in 1984. The Centre was renamed as Thomas Mar Athanasius Institute of Counselling (TMAIC) in 2003 consequent to the inclusion of training and research facilities.
The Institute is affiliated to the Serampore University and serves as a programme study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University. The Institute has been rendering counselling service, training and research guidance for the past 36 years.
