Electrical Multiskill E4: This module builds on the Control Panels module by recognising that most industrial equipment is now controlled by PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) systems. On successful completion of this module candidates will be able to:

  • describe the applications and use of PLCs

  • connect electrical devices into PLC Inputs and Outputs and understand the differences between the two

  • understand the way that a Ladder diagram controls PLC outputs and be able to use it as an effective fault diagnostic tool

  • state the operating principle of Safety Relays and how they are used and connected to improve control circuit and machine operation safety

On successful completion of this module, an individual will be able to understand how electrical devices connect to PLC systems and how PLC programmes control output circuits.  Candidates should be able to carry out basic work such as safely disconnecting and reconnecting components on circuits with hardwiring and software control.
