Techniskills was born from a meeting with the owner, Geoff Hobbs, and two Saracca members (Peter Hill and Landon La Grange) in 2007 wherein they mentioned that their staff had been in the Refrigeration and Ventilation industry for many years but had never received any recognition for what they knew. The question was whether courses could be developed that had relevance to their particular industry.
Geoff circulated the NQF Level 2 Qualification Unit Standards to all Saracca member companies and five interventions were chosen. Over a three year period, Techniskills ran as a joint venture with Northlink College, using their facilities and partially using their administrative staff to control the courses.
After numerous attempts at trying to obtain funding to replace aging equipment without success, it was decided in August 2010 to break away from the College, open as a private training provider and the current facility was identified.
As the need for additional courses grew, they were purely developed on industry’s needs and followed the path of competency based outcomes. The learner therefore had to prove competence to be successful and all evidence of this has been kept. All courses presented at Techniskills are geared as short, high impact interventions that the learner can use upon return to the industry and which are as flexible as can be made for the employer.
At Techniskills we can proudly say that by working closely with all stakeholders and building close relationships, we have gained respect from all involved. To us the quality of training far outweighs the quantity of interventions presented.
