Course Objectives

This unit of competency (UOC) meets the general construction induction training requirements of:

  • Part 1.1 Definitions and Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations;

  • Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia; and

  • Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria.

It is expected that site-specific induction training will be conducted prior to conducting construction work.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit. Relevant work health and safety state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm jurisdictional requirements:

  • Western Australia Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984

The target audience for this UoC will be those either undertaking training to enter the security industry or those currently employed within the security industry which are required to undertake security functions on construction sites, either locally or on remote mining, oil and gas sites.

 

Content

This unit of competency specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work.

The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.

It covers identifying and orally reporting common construction hazards, understanding basic risk control measures, and identifying procedures for responding to potential incidents and emergencies. It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

  • Identify and understand roles, responsibilities and rights of duty holders

  • Understand OHS communication and reporting processes

  • Apply the principles of risk management

  • Identify common hazards and control measures

  • Interpret and apply safety information and documentation

  • Use safe work practices

  • Respond to OHS incident

  • A person carrying out construction work, including site managers, supervisors, surveyors, labourers and trades persons

  • People who access operational construction zones unaccompanied or not directly supervised by an inducted person

 

Designed For

The target audience for this UoC will be those either undertaking training to enter the security industry or those currently employed within the security industry which are required to undertake security functions on construction sites, either locally or on remote mining, oil and gas sites.

Workers, whose employment causes them to routinely enter operational construction zones.

Anyone who doesn’t have a Construction Induction card found working on a construction site faces significant penalties imposed by SafeWork WA, the Government body responsible for administering and overseeing work health and safety; licensing and registration in WA.

 

Prerequisites Stipulated By The RTO

  • Must live in and have a Western Australian residential address.

  • Applicants must demonstrate good language, literacy and numeracy required at this level. A LLN assessment may be conducted at pre-enrolment to assess whether the applicant requires LLN support for this training

  • Participants may choose to undertake an LLN assessment with one of our qualified assessors prior to committing to their enrolment in this qualification

  • Basic to intermediate computer skills are also required for entry into this qualification.

  • 100 points of identification

 

USI Number Requirements:

All students doing nationally recognised training from January 1, 2018 need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). 

 

Course Structure

 

The course is presented via a combination of structured tutorials, workshops, case studies, video, practical assignments and workplace application.

Individual and group work activities and assessment activities are conducted throughout the course. All trainers and assessors are recognised industry experts, holding relevant experience and training qualifications.

They include security industry specialists, former serving police officers, military personnel and emergency response and medical specialists.
