This is the first step in your flight training.Getting Off The Ground. is the first step of your flight training! Through your Private Pilot License (PPL) training you will learn about meteorology, navigation, theory of flight, Canadian Aviation Regulations, and flight operations.
After completing your PPL, you will be able to fly during the day while keeping visual contact with the ground and continue on to additional ratings that will allow you to fly in various conditions.
This includes your Night Rating, Instrument Rating (IFR) and more.You must be 17 years or older to complete this license, but we allow training can start at the age of 15. You also need your PPL to start your Commercial Pilot License.
Step One
Introductory Flight
The first step to getting started with your flight training is to book an Introduction Flight. This can be done by visiting our Introductory Flight tab under Flight Training on the drop down bar above.
Get a hands on experience with the guidance of an instructor to see if flying is right for you.
Step Two
Medical
You will need a Category 3 medical for the Private Pilot’s Licence. A medical MUST be completed by an Aviation Medical Examiner and it ensures you are able to obtain a license. Search for a location here.
Step Three
Ground School
A 40 hour ground school is part of your license requirements and will prepare you for the written exam. Ground School can be taken at CFC or another facility. Click to register.
Step Four
Pstar And Roc-A Exam
You must complete your PSTAR and your Radio Exam prior to starting your flight training. Both of these exams can be completed at the Calgary Flying Club as long as you are a member.

Cost And Timeline
Depending on whether you train part-time or full-time, costs can range from $16-$25k or more. Depending on your availability it takes 6-12 months to obtain your license on average.
The Calgary Flying Club is located at the Springbank Airtport, only a five-minute drive west of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The Club is nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies and only a short drive from Banff National Park, and since 1927 has provided a truly unique experience for our members.
Members are permitted full access to the Club’s facilities, training resources, and rental aircraft, receive a discount on aviation fuel purchased at our fully automated filling station and are invited to numerous member events throughout the year.
Love aviation but do not fly? You do not have to be a pilot to be a part of the Club! In fact, many of our members don’t fly – they just love having fun and want to help the Club promote public interest in aviation. You also don’t have to live in Calgary. The Club has many members who live all over Canada.
