Shri B P Gupta was a well-known Indian Metallurgist & photographer and the founder of University Studios & School of Photography & Cinematography in Varanasi . The school was established in 1947 when the techniques of photography were not widely known to the common public. At that time, photography was primarily used for documentation and news reporting, and there were very few opportunities for people to learn the art and techniques of photography . Shri B P Gupta recognized this need and founded the photography school to provide a platform for aspiring photographers to learn the craft and hone their skills. Shri Gupta 's mission was to make under privileged students self-dependent . Under B P Gupta's leadership, the University Studios & School of Photography & Cinematography became one of the most prestigious photography schools in India. It has produced several renowned photographers who have made significant contributions to the field of photography.
Shri Gupta was a metallurgist by profession and worked at both Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) in Bhopal. It is commendable that shri Gupta established a photographic club in BHEL Bhopal and shared his knowledge of photography with more than 1000 people. It is also great to hear that senior officers of BHEL also have benefited from his knowledge . After his retirement from BHEL in 1976, once again he continued his school of Varanasi and gave photography training to people till the age of 80 years.
Today, with the advent of digital technology and the widespread availability of cameras and photography equipment, the techniques of photography are much more accessible to the general public. However, B P Gupta's legacy and his contributions to the field of photography continue to inspire and influence photographers around the world.
