Course Details

The saxophone (referred to colloquially as the sax) is a woodwind instrument usually made of brass and played with a single reed mouthpiece similar to that of the clarinet.

Although most saxophones are made from brass, they are categorized as woodwind instruments, because sound is produced by an oscillating reed, traditionally made out of woody cane, rather than lips vibrating in a mouthpiece cup as with the brass instrument family.

Our saxophone curriculum includes:

  • Practical saxophone

  • Theory on saxophone

  • Sight-reading

  • Scales and chords

  • Listening abilities

  • Stylistic knowledge and interpretation

  • “I am a very passionate and aspiring young musician. My love for music developed from a very young age. Music is my passion and I want to share that with my students. I started to play music as a keyboard player for a church band and other local bands -that’s when my love for brass and wind instruments developed. I started playing the trumpet in the year 2008. From then on wards I learned how to play other brass instruments which include; Euphonium, Tuba and Trombone. In 2012 I became the conductor and trainer of the Lutheran Church Brass Band, which gave me the opportunity to work and train with other local Brass Bands. In 2015 I obtained my Grade 3 in Theory of Music with Trinity. In 2017 I took up the Alto Saxophone and I currently have Grade 5 in Alto Saxophone Practical with ABRSM. I currently play Alto Saxophone for the University of Pretoria Symphony Wind Band and also for the UNISA Music Foundation Wind Band. I have honed my teaching, performance, technical and conducting skills and have also gained competency in combining my musical skills with my peers.”
