From grassroots to elite performance, this Sports Coaching and Development course will give you the skills to lead a team to victory or reap the rewards of supporting a range of groups in the local community.
You will be taught by athletes who have competed on the world's stage in the Commonwealth Games and FA leagues. With additional support from NE Youth, Newcastle United Foundation and Newcastle Eagles, you'll gain hands-on experience to become an accredited Assistant Coach and expand your knowledge of sport psychology, coaching and development.
Course alumni includes England cricketer Mark Wood.
Entry requirements
This is a two year course that leads to a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development. You will be placed on a programme depending on your grades.
Level 3 Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development
4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above
Including:
1 GCSE grade 3 in English or maths
1 GCSE grade 4 in English or maths
Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development
6 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and maths
What will I achieve?
This is a two-year programme. You will achieve a qualification after successful completion of each year.
In year one you will receive either a Level 3 Extended Certificate Sports Coaching and Development or Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.
In year two you will receive either a Level 3 National Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development or Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.

We will help you to become an accredited Assistant Coach and give you the chance to undertake work experience with Newcastle United Foundation and Newcastle Eagles Foundation.
NE Youth also offers you the chance to run your own social action project, delivering fundraising activities or events in the community.
English and Maths
English and maths skills are vital in the sporting industry, whether you are delivering a training programme or analysing V02 max and blood pressure. We embed these into your course to ensure you have every opportunity to enhance your skills.
If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 GCSE in English and/or maths you will be supported to achieve these as part of your programme.
Where can I progress?
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to progress to a related degree and you will be guaranteed a place on an FdSc Sports Performance Science or BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation at Newcastle College University Centre.
