The course will offer an overview of strategic management, with a particular focus on the dynamic complexity of the environment, organisational change and the challenges organisations face when developing strategic capabilities and competitive advantage.

Course Aims

  • The course will offer an overview of strategic management concepts and current debates. It will equip participants with tools and techniques to allow them a critical approach in formulating, implementing and assessing strategies and strategic options as well as the resources and capabilities needed to develop a competitive advantage for public, private or third sector organisations.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Assess the contribution of key thinkers in the field of strategy and engage with key debates and schools of thought.
  • Critically evaluate an organisation's current strategy and its strategic options using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Produce a group presentation and defend the findings of their analysis in both written and oral forms.
  • Appraise the lessons learnt in implementing strategic decisions in a business game simulation.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

  • Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
