Course Details

Tap dance is distinct style of dance. Tap focuses on intricate footwork to create rhythms and sounds made with metal taps on the soles of the shoes. Tap is known as an American art form with influences from Ireland, England, Africa and even the West Indies.

Tap is like playing drums with your feet, requiring its students to develop fine motor skills, balance and control, Tap is a challenge for both the mind and the body. Like other forms of dance, Tap is continually evolving and exploring itself within the genre.

In level 1 Tap/Jazz, beginner students experience the perfect introduction to Tap while learning beginner Jazz steps to incorporate into their movements. As students become more advanced they’re able to create faster and more intricate sounds and rhythms

If you or your child loves to make noise or follow the beat with your feet, then Tap is for you. Every student’s year culminates in the annual performances in June at the Winnipeg Centennial Concert Hall. We’ll see you on stage!

  • Teacher's Experience
  • Jennifer Nychek has many years of dance experience in tap, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, and hip hop. Jennifer first began dancing at the age of 4 and joined the Shelley Shearer School of Dance when she was 12 years old. She has participated in the Canadian National Dance Championships and the Manitoba Dance Festival, as well as many dance workshops throughout her years of dance. Jennifer began assisting jazz and tap at Shelley Shearer in her mid-teen years, and has taught and co-taught levels 1-4 jazz and a wide range of levels of tap. For the past few years, Jennifer has worked closely with Roy Smith, assisting and co-teaching the advanced tap classes, and she has been choreographing tap solos for a number of years. Jennifer now works full-time at the Health Sciences Centre Rehabilitation Hospital as an Occupational Therapist; however, due to her love of dance and her many wonderful and memorable years at Shelley Shearer, she has been unable to fully retire from the dance world just yet. Jennifer continues to be involved with choreographing tap solos and assisting with the advanced tap class on a part-time basis. Jennifer’s inspiration stems from the dancers that she works with and the teachers that she has learned from along the way. She looks forward to the next year to come.
