At the academy, we like to use a second word when describing theory - Language. At its core, theory is about teaching the student to be able to speak in music terms, understand music concepts, and apply them to their own playing.

Our group theory classes utilize old school classical theory concepts and adapts them to modern music education. We understand that the basics must be learnt before being able to break the rules, however we strongly encourage students to explore their theory knowledge with practical application and real world music. Not every song ends with a V-I cadence!

Here at the Hamilton Academy of music we work to unite traditional music education and practical exams with modern techniques and technology to enable students to become adaptable, creative and self sufficient artists. With the ever changing music industry, our goal is to modernize music education and keep music relevant and engaging while still focusing on the musical language and how it connects to all styles of music.

Students are taught at their own pace to understand the musical language which includes reading and writing sheet music, and understanding how scales and chords function and interact in traditional and modern styles of music.

Whether it's analyzing our favorite music, recording our own songs, or preparing for an exam or performance, we are working towards an understanding of the musical language and how it can be used for your specific needs.

Here’s one of our Co-Owners, Mathew Montani. A bit about Mathew, “I grew up in a family with very few musicians. My cousin is a fantastic singer, and my aunt achieved level 6 piano when she was young, but other than that there wasn’t a whole lot of music in my family. I started lessons at 5 years old and began teaching at 15. I've taught in 4 different music schools, and attended McMaster University for piano. My biggest passion with regards to music is composition. I aspire to one day write movie scores! I am in the band White Queen Falling, and enjoy gigging when time permits! My favourite aspect of teaching is inspiring students to want to learn. When a student wants to learn something rather than being forced to learn, the results are amazing!”
