Course Description:
This course aims to extend students' aural awareness through jazz solo transcription. Topics include vocalizing the solo, playing along with the recording, transcribing, problems of notation, internalising the solo, analysis, identifying and developing harmonic patterns, expanding and individualizing the material, and identifying nuances of phrasing, articulation, rhythm, and expression. 1.2 Course Introduction
This course aims to extend students' aural and theoretical awareness via a study of transcription (e.g., jazz solos; drum rhythms; chord progression identification, etc.). Topics include internalising solos (e.g., vocalising or playing with a recording), developing a handwritten “autograph,” melodic/harmonic relations, enharmonics, problems of notation & notational conventions, analysis, identifying and developing harmonic patterns, expanding and individualising solos and melodies, and identifying nuances of phrasing, articulation, rhythm, and expression. The course also develops the student’s ability to communicate findings through an engaging presentation.
