Course Details

Come learn to turn a wooden bowl on a foot-powered pole-lathe.

For a thousand years these simple, hand-built machines were used to turn all sorts of wooden products.

This course will teach you how to prepare a bowl blank with an axe (via demonstration/instruction), how to turn that blank into a bowl using turning hooks and various techniques, and how to finish the bowl with drying oils, paint, and other finishes.

Successfully using a pole-lathe requires a certain amount of stamina and coordination, so students should be prepared for a physically demanding class.

All tools and materials provided, including one bowl blank for each student.

If you have your own carving tools (knives, axes, etc.), feel free to bring them to class.

  • Eric
  • Teacher's Experience
  • Eric Goodson is a green woodworker based in Newburyport, MA. Primarily a wood turner, he creates bowls, cups, and plates using both a traditional foot-powered pole lathe and a Western electric lathe. Eric also hand carves spoons, spatulas, spreaders, shrink pots, and other things starting with different letters. Eric began his woodworking journey a decade ago, studying under prominent green woodworkers like Dave Fisher, Peter Follansbee, Jarrod Dahl, Robin Wood, and Jojo Wood. He works primarily with green wood as opposed to seasoned wood, preferring its workability and liveliness. Green wood moves as it dries, creating organic and energetic forms in partnership with the maker. Eric also uses simple hand tools when appropriate, creating surfaces that celebrate the fine finish and decorative facets left by razor sharp tools. Such a finish ages beautifully and testifies to the object’s hand-made origins.

Woodworking (Build Workshop)

This class represents a bit of a departure from the structure of our 10 week classes. In those, the heavy emphasis is on teaching new skills and information, and the class projects are seen as a hands on manner of practicing those skills.
