This is an introductory woodwork skills course, but people with woodwork knowledge and their own project, who want access to woodwork tools and advice may join. The course outlines woodwork skills, Power tools found in the home, plans, building methods, material specifications list (wood, screws, glue, etc.) and project timelines.
The aim is that students learn at their own level. There will be opportunities to undertake simple supplied projects, or to undertake your own project plan to fit the course time frame. Students must supply their own materials, fixings and finishes. Recycled materials are not allowed.
You will find Tawa College on Duncan Street in Tawa. It is in walking distance from either Tawa train station or Linden train station.
Our Carpentry programmes will provide you with the hands-on skills you need to start your career as a builder. With our workshop facilities, experienced teachers, industry connections and apprenticeship scheme, you’ll hit the ground running.
This class gives people the opportunity to develop skills and friendships as they work on their own project. Help with any problems is given by the tutor. Woodturning is also available. No recycled timber to be used.
Participants will need to be able to carry their project a short distance from their car into the workshop and then back again to be stored at home between lessons. Participants should wear comfortable clothes, closed toe shoes and jewellery that will not get caught in any machinery.
The course is an introduction to basic carpentry skills and knowledge used in carpentry, building and construction and joinery industries taught in one of the wood workshops.
The construction industry is the fifth largest sector in New Zealand's economy. The growing need for residential buildings, extensive infrastructure development, and rebuild projects will create heaps of job opportunities in the coming years.
