GWTP is a non-profit corporation organized to expand economic and educational opportunities for low- income residents of the West Town, Humboldt Park, and near West Side community areas.
The Greater West Town Training Partnership (GWTP) is a subsidiary organization established by Greater West Town Community Development Project (GWTCDP) to operate the agency's vocational training programs: Woodworkers and Shipping & Receiving.
The Project is a community-based venture created by community leaders recognizing the priority of establishing effective employment/training, educational and economic development programs to address the community's chronic social problems: dropouts, gangs, drugs, violent crime, illiteracy and family instability.
Mission
GWTP's mission is to develop model programs and policy initiatives linking the employment and training of the neighborhood workforce with local economic development efforts and the needs of small and mid- sized employers. The first Woodworking class began in January of 1993 and graduated the following April. Since then, seventy- one classes have graduated.
Students learn the safe and proper use of hand tools and how to read and draw basic woodworking plans. Students start woodworking in Pre-Kindergarten learning the basic fundamentals of measuring, and cutting, and their skills increase each year.
The Carpentry (CAR) Program provides theory along with hands-on training for job-entry skills up to craftsman level in a variety of areas. You can earn certificates in carpentry. All classes are open to all skill levels, unless otherwise noted.
Carpenters are involved in many different types of construction. They construct, repair, and install building frameworks and structures made from wood and other materials, work indoors and outdoors from installing kitchen cabinets to building highways and bridges.
In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home.
If you’ve already learned basic carpentry in our Bootcamp, take those skills and learn how to construct a small home in 6 weeks in our carpentry class. In this class, you will actively build a small house structure from foundation to roof.
