Apricot Yarn & Supply got its name from a childhood memory.
None of my grandmothers were knitters. In fact, they were not crafters in any way. My maternal set of grandparents had an apricot tree in their garden while I was growing up, and the one thing I remember most strongly of the "making" that my grandmother did was apricot jam. I can still see the old jelly jars, with a lid of paraffin to seal them, on grandma's counter, glowing in the sunlit afternoon.
I first learned to knit from my mom when I was about twelve years old. She was on a sweater kick. I cast on some stitches, and when I was done my "rectangle" was more of a parallelogram, with quite a few holes.
When I was pregnant with our first daughter, I decided to teach myself to knit again. The results of my newly re-learned skills were much better than my first attempt years earlier, and I was officially hooked! I come from a fine arts background with a BA in Fine Art, and an emphasis in painting. Over the years, my painting has continued in starts and stops, but knitting has been consistently something that keeps my hands busy and urge for making fulfilled.
In 2004, as a family we moved from California to New Jersey. During those three years I met a wonderful knitting group, as well as a new shop owner who had recently opened a great little knit and antiques shop in the center of town. I loved that little shop! I quickly realized that this was something I really would love to do - to operate a shop that focused on yarn and the fiber arts, interacting with a community of artists who have a passion for making like I do.
So, many years later, here we are starting our own little treasure of a knit shop.
Our Learn to Knit Class teaches the basics of knitting to get you started on your first project. The beginner knitting class will cover cast on, knit stitch, and bind off. The class fee includes one skein of yarn, a pair of needles, and a pattern.
