Our mission here at EVGC is to offer Gymnastics for all by delivering a range of different classes for all ages and abilities. Our aim is to provide fitness, fun and friendship at an affordable price, offering places to all, regardless of age, ability or economic circumstances.
We currently have over 1100 members aged 0 to 18+ years, attending weekly from babies at our Stay and Play sessions, progressing by age and ability through our preschool and recreational sessions and our elite gymnasts' programmes, culminating in our adults drop in sessions.
Club History
Erewash Valley Gymnastics Club (EVGC) was established in 1974 and is a private limited company with charity status. Our club began with one coach and six gymnasts in a leisure centre. Today we house over 1100 gymnasts across two sites, one of which we now own.
Nottingham School of Rhythmic Gymnastics joined us in 2001 making our club the largest non-profit making gymnastics club in Erewash. In 2001 coaches and committee began discussing the viability of finding our own premises to train in and by 2002 groups were nearing capacity and the hunt for suitable premises started. In 2003 we found Unit 2 Acton Road, Long Eaton and in January 2004 it opened.
In September 2009 we officially opened the extension at Acton Road. This doubled the floor size to 14000sq ft and enabled the club to once again increase the places offered to children in the local community to encourage wider participation in gymnastics and to offer a training venue to third party clubs in other disciplines and sports. In 2017 EVGC moved from Acton Road in Long Eaton to newer premises in New Tythe Street and in the same year we moved into a newly purchased building on Hallam Fields Road in Ilkeston, increasing our participation once again across a wider community base.
In 2019 we further developed our Ilkeston location and Phase 2 of our build extended our Squad gym to include a fantastic pit area. This and all the new equipment vastly improved the training facilities we can offer to our gymnasts as they strive to achieve higher skill levels. With the addition of bleacher seating the squad gym has hosted many internal events and is hired our for externally run competitions too. February 2020 saw our Phase 2 build complete and opened only to be closed shortly afterwards in April as the whole country went into the first Covid lockdown.
This was a hugely challenging time for our gymnasts and our staff. We delivered a huge programme of online training to our members and this helped us not only survive but saw us open again and welcome 150 new members in August. We introduced lots of Safety processes to safeguard our gymnasts, staff and parents as we navigated our way through various shorter lockdowns that followed. 2021 and 2022 saw us gradually returning to a more normal life at the gym and it was awesome!
In 2023 we look forward to a bright future and our calendar is filling up with exciting events. Our Squad gymnasts and their coaches are off to Chalons in France to visit our Twinning friends at La Rennaisance and our Display Squad are preparing to travel to Amsterdam in the Summer. We can't wait!
All our recreational gymnasts take part in GFA (Gymnastics For All), giving them the opportunity to try all the different disciplines of gymnastics in one place.
