About the Council
As a Council, our duty is to provide a diverse range of services, to protect and shape the environment in which we live, and to create the right conditions for a strong local economy. We must also make sure that all of these aims are delivered in a way that provides the best possible value for our taxpayers.
How we work

There are 66 elected Councillors (or Members) in the County Council and all elected Councillors sit in Full Council - a major
County Councillors are usually members of a political party (but they can be independent). The party with the most Councillors becomes the ruling party. The Council operates an Executive Leader and Cabinet model, which means that decisions are taken by the Cabinet and individually by Cabinet Members, as well as by authorised officers.
Our aim is to support you, to help you make a difference for children, young people and their families, improve outcomes for children, and develop high quality, inclusive and safe early education and childcare provision.
