The first season of Talavera Tennis Club in its present location was opened by the Mayor, Mr T C A Hislop, on 3 October 1936. Prior to that, it was privately owned and situated on Talavera Terrace, which was named Talavera by William Thomas Locke Travers. Born in Ireland, as a young man William Travers fought as a Spanish Legionnaire at Talavera in central Spain during the Carlist Wars (1835-1838). Lawyer, politician and naturalist, he named Salamanca Road, Talavera Terrace and San Sebastian Road, all no doubt on recall of his experiences in Spain. He was also part of a team which has a public reserve set aside for the Botanical Gardens. Travers Street is named after him.
Tennis (Junior Coaching) is offered by Talavera Tennis Club. Coaching is offered through Darren Ward and his Cyperus Tennis + Fitness business, which is based in Karori. They run coaching sessions at Talavera based on demand, and can offer alternative options if required.
