Course Details

Acro is a new stylized form of dance that teaches tricks executed on a hard dance surface unlike traditional gymnastics, which are executed on sprung mats. Acro incorporates elements of tumbling, balance, strength, flexibility and cardio.

When these skills are combined with a strong technical dance foundation dancers will learn how to do tricks like handstands, cartwheels, and more advanced tricks that can be incorporated in dance choreography.

  • Alena grew up as a daughter of a dance studio director, and has therefore been immersed in the dance world from a young age. Alena is a graduated Occupational and Physical Therapy Assistant with a knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the body in relation to it's movement abilities and patterns. She continues to train and seek educational opportunities pertaining to both careers. Alena is a certified Acrobatic Arts Level 1 instructor, a Rhythm Works instructor, and Tap/Jazz ADAPT instructor. She has trained in all styles of dance, but is most passionate about tap, contemporary and musical theatre. Alena recently studied music theory, tap history and improvisation in "The Next Steps" professional development program. Over the years, she has had opportunity to travel to New York, L.A., and Arizona for additional conventions and workshops. Alena has also performed aboard Carnival Cruise Lines, and at resorts in both the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Alena enjoys working with all ages and abilities, and is a motivating mentor to her students. She continually encourages her students to reach their personal potential. Alena believes in supporting her students with proper technique and training all while using imagination, creativity and humour within the classroom.

This class is a combination of dance and gymnastics. Dancers will combine jazz and acrobatics together to learn different tricks, balancing positions, tumbling, and contortion skills. There is a large emphasis on flexibility, strength, and control.
