SMSD was originally founded in 1970 by Shirley McPhail. We are a family business proud to celebrate a legacy of quality, traditional dance instruction.
For five decades, we have educated thousands of dancers in coordination, poise, grace, and mental and physical growth. Operating a family friendly, multi-generational studio, SMSD continues the philosophy and dance standards of founder Shirley McPhail through the directorship of her daughter, Edwina McPhail Worley.
Our three main goals consist of creating an enjoyable and fun dance atmosphere, nurturing and safe educational environment, and helping students develop proper dance techniques.
SMSD is also home to an extensive adult dance program, as well as Cotillion Austin Style.
Ballet for the beginning child from age 7 up to advanced levels. Basic Cecchetti methods used along with R.A.D. and Russian techniques. Individual attention and thoroughness stressed. A very disciplined form of dance study that is the basis for all dance.

Building on the ballet foundation they’ve learned, our ballet dance classes for teens and tweens help them refine movements and positions. Through barre, center work, and floor progressions, your child will expand their interest, skills, and technique.
A foundation class for the absolute beginner, you will learn the basic positions of arms and legs, correct body posture and alignment, a beginning vocabulary of steps and simple combinations of movements using those steps
Ballet Class as part of the Dance Company. The entire performance based company class consists of ballet, tap, modern/contemporary, and jazz dance for ages 11-13. Please register for each genre separately.
