The aim of the the Carpentry and Joinery Level 2 Traineeship is to develop a broad base of wood working skills and practical techniques.
It aims to enable learners to gain skills and knowledge relating to first and second fix carpentry techniques, health, safety and welfare in wood occupations, interpreting construction drawings, maintaining and using woodworking hand and power tools setting, marking out and manufacture of joinery products, understanding construction methods setting, and operating CNC machines.
This course offers a valuable opportunity for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry to gain hands-on experience and develop essential skills in woodworking, construction techniques, and building maintenance.
The Level 2 Traineeship combines practical training with theoretical study to provide a comprehensive educational experience.
Trainees will work under the guidance of experienced carpenters and joiners, learning to measure, cut, shape, and install timber components for various construction projects.
They will develop proficiency in using a range of tools and equipment, such as saws, chisels, planes, drills, and routers.
Entry Requirements
The College will review the qualifications and/or experience held by applicants and will consider whether this profile shows an ability to progress towards a level 2 traineeship framework.
Applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before 1st July in the year of proposed entry to the course.
All applicants must be able to demonstrate at interview that they have a satisfactory level of fluency in English – both written and spoken. The College reserves the right to refer any applicant to appropriate English Language or literacy classes until their level of fluency in written and spoken English is sufficient to allow participation in other areas of study.
Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a Level 1 qualification defined as 4 GCSEs at grades D-G including Maths and English grades D-F or equivalent. Enhanced entry grades for maths and English apply in certain subject areas. These will be discussed with applicants following receipt of their application.
Applicants presenting with a Junior Certificate at higher level must have achieved 4 grades A-C to facilitate entry to level 2 courses. Applicants presenting with a Junior Cycle must have achieved 4 merits or above to facilitate entry to level 2 courses.
On enrolment the applicant will undertake an initial assessment which will confirm whether they should enter the full Traineeship or the Introductory Phase.
During the Pre-Entry Advice Sessions which may take place either on campus, via telephone or video call (Microsoft teams) , applicants will be expected to demonstrate that they are committed and motivated to the programme.
The College may also use other evidence provided as part of the application process.
Please note that entrance requirements may be increased in some vocational areas.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment in the Level 2 Traineeship is based on a combination of practical assessments, online exams and knowledge booklets.

They will also be required to complete online exams and knowledge booklets to assess their understanding of carpentry and joinery principles and techniques.

Our Story
Southern Regional College is one of the largest education providers in Northern Ireland with approximately 10,000 students enrolled annually and over 900 members of staff.

NVQ Level 2 in Site Carpentry is a competency-led qualification for carpenters who work in the construction sector. The qualification shows that you have the relevant knowledge to conduct your role.
Our Carpentry and Joinery courses provide you with an opportunity to progress through the levels and develop advanced skills, underpinning knowledge and associated practical skills which are expected of a Site Carpenter within the construction industry.
This elemental two day beginners' course is intended for those new to woodworking or with limited experience.
At the end of the course you will have a tool box to take home and a strong foundation of woodwork skills that will enable you to carry out basic woodworking projects at home or to progress on to our Woodwork for Beginners Level 2 classes.
