Course Details

Contemporary is a very current style of dance utilizing ballet and jazz techniques combined with modern movements. Developed in the mid-twentieth century, it has since become one of the world’s most popular and enjoyable performance styles.

Dancers must have a strong background in technical dance such as ballet and jazz as contemporary borrows movements from these formal genres. Modern elements are added to contemporary choreography such as torso contractions, floor work, and improvisation.

Contemporary is an excellent addition to a dancer’s repertoire once they’ve developed good strong technical dance aspects.

  • Lauren began dancing with KDF at the age of 3, following in the steps of her two older sisters. Since then, she has trained, competed, and taken exams in tap, jazz, and ballet and trained and competed in hip hop, lyrical, contemporary, and musical theatre. She completed her ADAPT Pre-Intermediate 3 jazz exam, ADAPT Intermediate 1 tap exam, and her RAD Intermediate ballet exam. Lauren has had the opportunity to train in hip hop styles with Vince Akinyode as part of the Eye Candy World of Dance teams in 2015, 2016, and 2018, as well as with Paul Otterbein as part of Team Canada Hip Hop in 2017. She was also part of Team Canada Tap in 2014 and 2016. In the past two years, Lauren has trained with tap choreographers Caley and Kelsey Carr in Los Angeles. Lauren is currently studying at the U of S with the College of Arts and Science. She is excited to share her passion and knowledge of dance with her students at KDF!
