Course Details

Contemporary Dance bridges the gap between jazz and ballet, offering a fluid movement style and encouraging creative thinking. This form of dance often shares emotive storylines, encouraging students to express themselves through movements. While it is less ‘rigid’ than ballet, contemporary still requires students to build a strong technical foundation.

  • Jaezila Crittenden began dance classes at 6-years-old at The Watrous School of Dance, under the direction of Nadine Riehl and Mandy Yee Seller; training in the techniques of RAD ballet, jazz, lyrical, musical theatre, and tap. Jaezila furthered her dance education in Vancouver, British Columbia where she attended Simon Fraser University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Dance with Honours in 2011, and the Contemporary Arts Service Award. While attending university Jaezila began dancing professionally with The Dancers Dancing Company under the direction of Judith Garay (The Martha Graham Company) in the remount of “Extra Extra”, and The Karen Jamieson Company in the initial performance of “Collision”. Other standout artists she has been fortunate to work with include: Mui Cheuk-Yin (Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal), Serge Bennethan (Toronto’s Dancemakers), Jennifer Mascall (Mascall Dance), and Desiree Dunbar (Dezza Dance). In 2014, Jaezila accepted the position of Director at The Saskatchewan Express Musical Theatre Studio, in Regina, SK. After two successful seasons she stepped down from her role and began work on a honours degree in psychology, whilst acting in local film, commercials, and modeling. Currently, Jaezila is finishing the final classes of a master’s degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Regina. Jaezila takes great pride in mentoring and providing students with the tools to integrate the foundations of contemporary dance technique upon their highest potential in the supportive, family-orientated environment that Class Act Studio provides.
