In 2015, JDNZ (Jazz Dance New Zealand) introduced Contemporary medal exams and we will be offering these for our students this year.
Contemporary classes are offered to students from approximately 9 years old. A background in ballet or jazz is not needed for contemporary dance.
Students are taught non-syllabus work which now can lead towards sitting a NZAMD medal test and/or JDNZ medal exam. In 2015, JDNZ (Jazz Dance New Zealand) introduced Contemporary medal exams and we will be offering these for our students this year.
With each class the teacher will compile work to suit the level of the students. Although students may spend more than a year or so in on “level” (e.g. Beginner) the work the teacher prepares will be to the level that our students require.

Past pupils from the school have gone on to train full time and dance, in both New Zealand and abroad, as well as current students training at the New Zealand School of Dance in their Associate Program.
Dance classes are tailored for pre-schoolers through to advanced students. The fun and supportive environment with its’ emphasis on enjoyment ensures students feel comfortable as they learn to dance.
ALSD caters for all levels of commitment. We acknowledge and support all the different reasons our students choose to dance and we strive to provide classes that will cater for every student’s needs, whether it be for fitness and fun, or in the hope of entering into a career in dance.
The School strives to provide pupils with self confidence, grace, co-ordination, musicality, discipline and an appreciation of the arts. Students are given the opportunity to perform at our annual dance production.
Shore Dance offers Contemporary Dance classes following the NZAMD Contemporary syllabus.
The levels are made up of a series of exercises including including; plié and spine articulation, port de bras, swings and suspension, rolling progression, travelling progressions, floor sequences, turns, leaps, compositions and dances.
Contemporary and lyrical styles of dance are becoming more and more popular as they are fun, expressive, and creative.
Teaching the NZAMD syllabus from Introductory to Level 6, we introduce older students to organic, beautiful and emotive contemporary dance.
