The contemporary class gives students the opportunity to bring a new level of expression to their dancing and teaches the ability to work within choreography to tell a story or fulfill intent. The class begins on the floor with stretching and strengthening exercises. Students move on to using techniques found around the world and incorporating an eclectic range of music.

Contemporary dance is very interpretive in its choreography and often focuses on emotions or storytelling. Contemporary can be balletic or abstract, jazz-influenced or lyrical, structured or unconventional.
Contemporary dance uses elements from classical ballet and modern dance. These elements create a strong technique based style of dance that incorporates creativity and personal style.
Lyrical and contemporary combine the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom, fluidity, expressiveness and airier aspects of jazz. These classes are expressive and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through movement.
Principles of contemporary dance include centering, alignment, gravity, contraction, release and suspension. It also uses expression and emotion to portray images, lyrics and feelings.
Get in tune with your body in our Contemporary class! Work your way through our warm- up and stretch and discover the fundamentals of contemporary such as contract and release, suspension and fall all while transitioning smoothly through the floor.
