Dancenorth’s contemporary dance classes are designed to get you moving just like you, but even better. Inspired by its modern dance heritage, these classes rebel against their classical ballet counterpart, embracing individuality, expression and freedom. There is a specific focus on engaging weight and associated forces (gravity and momentum) to drive movement in a way that is both efficient and bold.
Classes include a series of short sequences (including floor work, standing and travelling), which gradually prepare the whole body to move, with greater ease, power and flow. Each session concludes with a longer, choreographic sequences, set to great music, allowing participants to put movement ideas and pathways learned during class into practice.
Dancenorth is fast becoming one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies having presented work in over 35 International Arts Festivals and venues around Australia and the world.
As a model for making outstanding art in a regional community, Dancenorth has received several accolades including the prestigious 2017 Sidney Myer Performing Arts Group Award, Australian Dance Award (Best Community Dance Award), Greenroom Award (Best Ensemble If_Was_), two Helpmann awards for the MFI Commissioned work Attractor (Best Dance Production and Best Choreography in a Ballet, Dance or Physical Theatre Production) and a Greenroom award for Composition / Sound Design for Attractor, along with numerous other nominations.
Dancenorth empowers and supports artists by providing a creative hub for many artistic voices including a diverse range of choreographers, guest collaborators, artists in residence and dancers. Alongside our professional ensemble and touring productions sits an equally vital pillar of focus, the Community Experience Projects.
Driven by a dedicated team, Dancenorth works with diverse and minority communities across Queensland using dance to support, enhance, inspire and heal - bringing communities together.
Contemporary dance is a free-flowing style of dance that takes many forms. Explore the movement potential of your body with a warm up, stretches, technique exercises such as contraction and release, basic Ballet barre work, floor work and choreography.Â
This style works with the body’s natural lines and energy, and dancers develop a greater range and fluidity of movement.
Contemporary is an extremely fluid and expressive form of modern dance. It is not associated with specific dance techniques, but rather with emotions.
Diploma of Art (Classical & Contemporary Dance) is offered by Australian Dance Performance Institute.
Our Contemporary Dance Class focusses on the strength and control of the dancers legwork, utilising the technique taught in ballet and engaging the core.
