This popular form of dance is an electric mix of styles developed during the middle of the twentieth century which has since grown to become one of the dominating performance genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world.
Although originally borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, contemporary has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance.
Here at Denise Dancing School we follow the innovative ISTD & ATOD systems of training which are carefully structured, ensuring students are learning the most up to date contemporary techniques and styles.
The contemporary genre contains elements of floor work, more movement in the upper body than classical ballet (like contractions, releases, spirals, etc), usually has less focus on turnout and extremely high leg extensions, encourages off balance or counterbalance techniques and often uses improvisation.
Ballet students find it an excellent style to compliment their ballet training.
Denise Dancing was established in 1982. Commencing at the McDonald Hall in Padbury & the Ocean Ridge Recreation Centre.
Due to the success & growth of the school in 1991 it was obvious that the Denise Dancers needed a home of their very own, therefore Miss Denise opened Joondalup’s very first dance studio.
Over the years Denise Dancing School has always strived to stay at the forefront in the dance industry both in its facilities & training methods.
Now celebrating our 37th year DDS invites you to become part of the continuing success story at "the original & still the best dance school in Joondalup".
Contemporary dance is one of our popular dance styles and is a particularly innovative way of moving the body.
Contemporary is a great way to support children’s development in other genres of dance as well. Contemporary dance uses the body’s natural lines and energy to create new movements, which have a greater range and fluidity than conventional dance.
Contemporary dance is very interpretive in its choreography and often focuses on emotions or storytelling. Contemporary can be balletic or abstract, jazz-influenced or lyrical, structured or unconventional.
Contemporary choreography is often considered to be different and experimental. It has a very broad and creative vocabulary and contains movements that are both static and dynamic, lyrical and athletic, and that invert, twist, expand and contract. The boundaries of contemporary dance are limitless!
Contemporary dance is an artform that uses human movement as its palette. We train the dancer to move as a whole being with particular attention to skills that bring extra awareness to the torso, getting in and out of the floor, improvisation and encouraging a thinking dancer.
