Contemporary dance allows the students to experience a freedom of movement quite different from any other style.
Our open classes assure every class is fresh and exciting and tailored to our three levels; Beginners, Intermediate, and seniors. Each class begins with a warm-up, across the floor movement, and finishes with choreography.
In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong and controlled legwork of ballet and jazz, powerful allegro (Jumps), floor work, stress on the torso with contract-release, controlled and uncontrolled movement with fall and recovery, and freedom of improvisation movement.
Contemporary is very free in its diverse styles of movement; from grounded, African inspired, athletic, harsh, to smooth, classically controlled, to commercialized modern-inspired movement. This diversity of movement within the class inspires, excites and keeps every class fun whilst challenging the students to find body awareness through exploring unusual shapes and changing dynamics.
SCPAC offers capped classes for all styles of dance, to ensure each child gets the individual attention they require. Capped classes ensure for an optimal teaching environment. This guarantees the students’ needs are continuously being met to a high-quality standard.

Diploma of Art (Classical & Contemporary Dance) is offered by Australian Dance Performance Institute.
Lyrical and contemporary combine the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom, fluidity, expressiveness and airier aspects of jazz. These classes are expressive and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through movement.
Contemporary & Lyrical Dance uses dance techniques and methods found in ballet, and modern dance and also draws from other philosophies of movement that are outside the realm of classical dance technique.
Get in tune with your body in our Contemporary class! Work your way through our warm- up and stretch and discover the fundamentals of contemporary such as contract and release, suspension and fall all while transitioning smoothly through the floor.
Designed by ex-Ballet dancers this style is still technical but with much more focus on rounded shapes, floorwork, grounded movements, and expressiveness. Unlike the “prettier” Ballet style, Contemporary Dance can be unexpected and unusual but is still powerful and captivating.
