Contemporary dance is a fluid, relaxed style of movement that is very ‘grounded’ into the floor. Strong emphasis is placed on torso and abdominal strength, as well as breadth and strength through the chest and upper body.
Contemporary dance evolves stylistically as new teachers and choreographers add to its vocabulary. It is an ever changing and expressive dance form.
Why learn Contemporary?
Nearly all classical dancers today have trained in both ballet and contemporary. Many ballets have a contemporary element to them, and classical dancers are expected to have learnt contemporary vocabulary.
Contemporary allows dancers to move freely without the confines of turn-out, and also accommodates a variety of physiques. It is a very physical dance form using all parts of the body, and is therefore a wonderful way to get fit!
Do you have exams?
We have annual contemporary exams between August and October each year, run by the New Zealand Association of Modern Dance. All our syllabus work is NZAMD Contemporary, although ‘open’ classes may include other contemporary styles such as Martha Graham technique.
Each stage is as important as the other – more than any other dance form, ballet requires correct technique and patient correction from a trained teacher. After 14 years of training, and have completed a Master of Arts degree at Auckland University, Anna decided to concentrate on a teaching career.
She completed two years of part-time study with Julia Barry studying a course developed by her, based on the Royal Ballet School teachers training program, while at the same time teaching part-time for vocational students at the Auckland Ballet Academy.
There are many ways to do something. By choosing to dance with us you are accepting the way we do our something.
A fun, casual environment where students will learn technique and different choreography throughout the term. Students in these classes do not sit examinations.
Contemporary dance involves versatility and improvisation with a strong focus on floor-work and use of gravity.
Contemporary dance incorporates a collection of methods and techniques found in, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
The students work on technique, terminology, and routines for our concerts held in July and December.
